Sculpture “Dot”

About the iniciative

The sculpture “Dot”, dedicated to the unique letter “ė” of the Lithuanian language, invites everyone to look back at the uniqueness of the Lithuanian language, to recover it as it really is – with dots and ticks.

Made of stainless steel, the 3-meter-diameter mirror sculpture in the form of a circle resembles a punctuation mark – a point. The sculpture was designed and implemented by sculptor doc. Tadas Vosylius. The entire artistic installation was donated to Kaunas and the whole of Lithuania by the “Acme Grupė” group of technologies, film distribution and sustainable energy companies.

The artistic installation is filled with Lithuanian words that contain the letters “ė”.

On the sculpture, you can find the following Lithuanian words: laumė (pixy), saulė (sun), žemė (land), tėvynė (homeland), laisvė (freedom), meilė (love), šlovė (glory), garbė (honour), laimė (happiness), sėkmė (success), gerovė (welfare), gyvybė (life), lygybė (equality), vienybė (unity), raidė (letter).

Why is the sculpture dedicated namely to the letter “ė”?

The Lithuanian alphabet has 32 letters, but only “ė” is so special. It was used for the first time in 1653, in the first Lithuanian grammar compiled by Danielus Klein. It is the only letter that has no analogues in any other language of the world. This letter was chosen as a symbol of the uniqueness of the Lithuanian language.

Technologies often seem to rub off the dot of the letter “ė” in the fast pace of written language, but we hear it in speech. Therefore, the sculpture is a symbolic reminder not to forget the dots and ticks of all Lithuanian letters, because this is what creates the uniqueness of our language.  According to the sculptor, simplicity is the whole secret – the idea of the sculpture “Dot” showed how much one simple dot can change and mean. After all, sometimes forgetting to put it on can change the entire meaning of a word or sentence.
